Writing books is a lot like life.
Of course, as a writer I’m biased.
But here’s why I say this—and how it ties into the philosophy I live by:
Feel good now.
When I’m writing a book, there are two questions I hold at all times:
- Would I enjoy reading this part of the book?
- Will I enjoy writing this part of the book?
Because it’s not just about creating a finished product I’m proud of. It’s about actually feeling inspired to sit down and create it in the first place.
When I feel “stuck” on a chapter or scene, it’s usually because—consciously or not—I’m answering no to one of those questions. Maybe I know that as a reader I’d be bored… or confused… or underwhelmed. Or maybe as a writer, I’m just not stretching myself in ways that feel fun and magnetic.
But if I can answer yes to both? Then not only will I sit down and actually write it… others will enjoy reading it too.
And I think we can apply these same questions to life—just worded slightly differently:
- Will I enjoy remembering this experience?
- Will I enjoy living this experience?
If the answer to both is yes, then the choice feels good now—and it will also feel good later.
Because we are all writing the book of our life, one page at a time.
If you feel stuck, chances are you’re not inspired by the story you’re telling. Your character isn’t making interesting choices. The plot isn’t compelling. Something’s missing.
Only you know what that is—because you’re the reader whose taste matters most.
You’re holding the pen.
Your hands are shaping this chapter.
So make the plot more exciting. Let your main character take bolder actions. Put yourself in richer, stranger, more beautiful situations.
Feel good now as you write the story of your life.
Feel good now as you read it.
Get really good at feeling good now—with every sentence, every page.
That’s what makes a book—or a life—a true masterpiece.
Writing the next sentence of my life,
Jack
