It was just after midnight.
But I was not asleep.
Instead, I was sitting up in bed, shaking a 20-sided die into a plastic cup, peering at it with a mix of trepidation and excitement.
The die came up 19.
“YES!” I crowed with triumph.
Then, narrowing my eyes in smug concentration, I began to narrate:
“The demon Zol’gakon, realizing his attempted revenge is not worth his freedom, tries to flee. But Vasili extends his ring-covered hands. ‘You cannot escape!’ he declares in a thick Russian accent. With a flash of sorcerous power, he drags the demon back into his ruby ring. With a cry of dismay, the red-eyed spirit disappears into smoke.”
Beside me, my partner rolled the dice and launched into her own narration:
“Above Vasili, the hellspawn Asis flaps their leathery wings, dueling with a golden griffon. With a mighty blow of their greatsword, Asis cuts one of the griffon’s wings clean off. Shriek. It falls with a splash into the icy river. Gone. Meanwhile, the massive arctic fox Drezos the Trickster watches his minions being cut down. Green eyes burning with unholy light, he snarls, ‘You have not seen the last of me,’ before vanishing into the dark forest with a twitch of his snowy tail.”
Feel good now.
Between 12:30 and 1 a.m., we’d finished our spontaneous fantasy role-playing session. It began with reading aloud, turned into watching one of our favorite fantasy shows, and ended with us generating random characters and playing for hours — smug Vasili the dark elf demon hunter and Asis the mischievous blade dancer.
We laughed. We rolled dice. We did silly voices. And above all, we had fun.
Feel good now.
I used to obsess over optimization.
If I wasn’t in bed by the right time…
If I didn’t tick every box on my to-do list…
If I didn’t “perform” at a certain standard…
Then I believed I was doing life wrong.
It felt awful.
Now I measure success differently: by how good I feel.
And what I’ve learned is that when I prioritize feeling good now, the results I used to chase show up naturally.
In just the past few months:
- I’ve traveled across Europe, staying with new friends I met through this mission.
- I’ve had hundreds of thousands of people see my videos.
- I’ve finished writing the Lightbringer trilogy I started six years ago.
- I’ve moved into a dream house in the South of France.
- I’ve earned thousands doing what I love.
- And I’ve felt good through all of it.
Feel good now.
Make decisions that feel good now, not ones that only look good “on paper.”
You may find yourself doing unexpected things — like staying up late battling demons and griffons in the Slavic wilderness — but you’ll feel amazing.
And you’ll realize: everything you wanted comes easier when you start with joy.
Now, I’m off to hunt Drezos the Trickster before he gets up to anything nefarious,
Jack (aka Vasili the Smug Dark Elf)
