Feel good now.
Sometimes, that means doing what we already know.
When we know ourselves well, we often think we know exactly how to make ourselves feel good.
But sometimes, life asks us to step into the unknown —
and learn how to make that feel good, too.
This is a chapter from my book THE STRANGER about stepping into the unknown:
The Whirlpool Gate Again
In the tunnels under the crippled mountain, what was once a network of survival bunkers had been overrun by monsters. Demons, they were called, though no one knew if that’s what they really were.
The stranger and his comrades had not come to find out. They had come to kill.
Dolf the fireman flicked his wrist and bathed the tunnel ahead in a vortex of flames.
Demons gibbered and burned.
The company hacked their way through ancient concrete corridors to the very roots of the mountain. The stranger had been here before, but without allies he had been forced to turn back.
In a pit behind a cracked and blackened blast door, the whirlpool gate frothed and spat. The power that made demons surged through this gate.
For hours, it seemed, they stood at the edge of that pit in the dark. They faced wave after wave of monsters and turned them back. But this was a gate without hinge or lock and no bars that would keep it closed for long.
Shri Yazi was the first to realize what must be done. They would have to find the source, somewhere on the other side. They would have to end this nightmare there.
With a cry, Shri Yazi’s raven folded its wings and dove into the pit.
The witch opened her Third Eye and followed.
