Feel good now.
Even when there are bees all over your baguette.
We were in the small French village of Tourrettes-sur-Loup for market day.
We’d bought fresh produce from a lovely couple bantering in Spanish with the young ladies ahead of us. Picked up a handmade bag from Madagascar with a bright yellow butterfly stitched into it. And a pair of rainbow-striped shorts with a parrot, a palm tree, and the words Peace and Love in curly cursive.
Now we were in line at the bakery.
Us and the bees.
But the bees weren’t waiting in line.
They zipped in and out of the bakery at will, darting into the glass pastry cases and back out again… but not before inspecting the merchandise.
One hand pie had been wrapped in plastic for protection. The bees were undeterred. Half a dozen had wriggled under the plastic, exploring the flaky crust and golden folds.
I shrugged inwardly.
Some people would panic at so many bees. Others would be horrified at the thought of an insect strolling across their crème brûlée tartlet.
But the thought came to me:
“The bees just want to feel good now.
We feel good now.
It’s all good now.”
No one was stung. No one was swatted.
Everyone got what they wanted and went on their way.
On our way out of town, right by the car, we spotted a magnificent old fig tree.
“Let’s see if there are any figs,” I suggested.
There were. A couple were hiding in the shade of big leaves. I even had to do a little jump to snatch one from a higher branch.
A handful of ripe figs completed our trip to the medieval village — like a gift from the tree for passing through the bee gauntlet without losing our cool.
Speaking of cool, it was time to get home and jump in the pool.
It was hot.
There had been bees in the bakery.
And we felt good.
Remember:
Feel good now.
Everyone on this planet — human or bee — just wants to feel good now.
And we can.
So long as we don’t freak out… and swat our neighbor.
Sending love from the south of France,
Jack
