“Rain stopping in 18 minutes…”
That was the forecast from the Weather app.
I scowled and made my signature irritated gremlin noise.
It was morning, and I wanted to brush my teeth.
Since we got back to California, we’ve been staying in a lovely studio on the side of a ravine.
The room is cozy, and the hillside is gorgeous.
Every morning, I wake up to thick mist rolling down over the rocky pinnacles like something out of a mythic fantasy movie.
But the studio is also a 100-yard climb down the hillside to the main house — where the wood-burning stove, bathroom, and Wi-Fi make it the best place to relax and enjoy a rainy day.
And currently…
the rain was coming down in sheets.
Feel good now.
Making the dash would leave us sopping wet.
And even though I wanted to brush my teeth, I didn’t need a shower.
So…
What do I do with those 18 minutes?
Do I stare out at the rain, feeling bad and continuing to snarl in impotent gremlin rage?
Or do I find a way to feel good now?
You already know.
Feel good now.
So I gave up on the gremlin noises.
I opened a spicy fantasy adventure book that had been sitting on my digital bookshelf for a couple of weeks.
The cover promised a hero who battles zombie hordes and falls in love with many beautiful elves.
I started reading.
Then, about ten minutes later…
I looked out the window.
Darn.
The rain had stopped early.
I guess it was time to brush my teeth.
Feel good now.
When the world puts something in front of us that blocks our intended direction…
Don’t stare at it and make angry gremlin noises.
Take a minute.
Or eighteen.
Do something that feels good now.
Listen to the rain.
Read a book.
And if you don’t have one on hand, you can grab one of mine from Amazon:

Or download three of my favorites directly from my virtual bookstore:

They’re fun, mythic, and full of everyday wisdom.
Feel good now.
Because life isn’t really about getting down the hill to brush your teeth.
It’s about feeling good every step of the way.
Now, I’m off to brush my teeth…
and then get back to my new book.
